One of the most popular Christian groups of all time return this month with the much anticipated follow up to the ‘Adoration’ worship project, entitled Devotion. The album has been released with much expectation, especially with the high acclaim that the first worship project achieved.
The newsboys have a distinct and original pop sound and it translates very well into this collection of worship songs, mainly written specifically for the project, but also featuring a couple of known songs from Tim Hughes and Matt Redman. In fact, I have to say that this album contains the best version I have heard of the popular “Blessed be your name” featuring a fine vocal performance from guest vocalist Rebecca St James, the track is really given a new lease of life and it would be great to see Rebecca and the Newsboys working together more often. The title track Devotion really stands out as a very good song, its chunky guitars give it an up tempo, get up and dance type of feel, which is also carried through into I love your ways. One of the other tracks, Landslide of Love, seems to have more than a bit of the U2 vibe to it and will probably prove very popular with the fans. Name above all names is also treated to the newsboys pop treatment and works really well. The guest guitarists on the album, Delirious’s very own Stu G and Tree63’s Jon Ellis really add something to the sound as well, its nice to see such collaboration between artists to produce good worship music.
This is a very good album and I don’t think it will disappoint newsboys fans and should prove popular in the wider worship market, it is very nice to have an upbeat style when a lot of recent worship releases have seemed much more calm and contemplative. A third newsboys worship album? We certainly won’t be complaining. |
