Mary Mary are back following a three year break, and full of spirit on their self-titled new release. The first single from the album, the irrepressibly catchy 'Heaven' which has ridden the number one spot on the Gospel Billboard over in America for seven weeks, but what I find more exciting than that is the track rumoured to be the next single and my favourite track from the whole album, “The Real Party” it makes you want to get up and dance, has a really punchy pop groove to it, and must be destined to be another hit. “Get your shout and your dance, make some noise move your feet and your hands!”
It's not all punchy pop though, the second track, 'Biggest, Greatest Thing' is Jazz through and through, with saxophone and touches of the great Ella Fitzgerald about the vocals. Yesterday has the feel of a classic song from a different era, its got that laid back, easy listening style that makes it instantly timeless and beautiful.
The album also features Kirk Franklin who has long established himself as one of the leading names in the gospel market, on the track 'And I', a calm, soothing worship song, with piano and strings highlighting the quality of the musical production on the album. 'Speak to me' is another easy going, relaxed gospel song, and is a great way to close the album in prayer.
What I like about Mary Mary is that despite the accolades they have had, and the taste of secular success, they don't change or dilute their message, in fact if anything, it gets stronger, this music is about God, there is no room for ambiguity here, it's lyrics are straight up for God.
The album is an impressive release, and we see throughout strong lyrics paired with the very good vocals, at a time when many weaker vocalists are getting record deals, it is great to hear to such very good singers, with fabulous voices. I'm sure that this will go down really well, and watch out for 'Heaven' and 'Real Party' making an impression in the mainstream sometime soon!
