I never know quite how to come at a review of a Crowder album, mainly because I spend the bulk of my time trying to figure out what exactly it is. It's a worship album of course, but anyone expecting the song styles you hear at church, or even the song styles you hear on Passion CD's for which he has so long featured is in for a surprise.
The David Crowder Band like to push the envelope, not content to put out more identikit worship tracks they try new things, new beats, sampling, scratching, different instruments, different styles and what you are left with is a truly innovative album. You can't compare A Collision to any other worship album, because there hasn't been anything like this before, its new and fresh. From the Church friendly 'Here is our King' and 'We Win!' to the punky bluegrass version of the classic 'I saw the light' the album is a journey, although where to or from remains a mystery even after several listens, and I suspect that this may be the beauty of the album, every time you listen to it you notice something you didn't before, you're finding awesome new lyrics you never noticed before, or loops in the background that you didn't expect, there's even Man Utd crowd noises in there at one point! The lyrics are powerful and there are some real stand out tracks, my two favourites being 'Beautiful Collision' and 'Foreverandever etc'.
This is the best release yet from the band, and one which is bound to be remembered for some time, it's not mainstream worship as we know it, but its passionate and innovative and musically that bit different to make it really stand out. |
