The
creation of Six Steps Records this year has gave a great opportunity for
Passion worship leader Charlie Hall to get his worship music out to the
world. We took the opportunity to interview Charlie and ask him how he
feels about this great opportunity. "I love this. Just that people
have the capability of getting this music
is awesome to me" says Charlie "I feel like God has done something
in me that I can put a voice to. I am excited about people hearing that.
I also love the label and the people involved that makes this experience
even sweeter." It is certainly of a great benefit to the rest of
us to have the worship of Charlie and Label mate Chris Tomlin become widely
available.
The new album "Porch
and Altar" is in many ways rockier and edgier than his work on
the Passion albums, which Charlie explained to us. "I feel like
my musical language is consistently changing, growing evolving. The
things I wanted to say in Porch and Altar I believe demanded a more
intense heart musically, so I went there. I feel things intensely as
well and am wanting to interpret my desires for God and my life as close
as I can musically. The other difference is the leaders and musicians
that come together for a passion event are a merger of tastes. We each
lay down preferences to land in a place where we all feel good musically
and spiritually." The songs on the album are all self-written and
cover the theme of crying for God, "The theme of Porch and Altar
is a cry for God. a cry for revival, intimacy, and a renewed love of
the cross and it's power in our lives. lying between the Porch and the
altar is lying between God and man and asking for mercy and a heart
change. That is what I need and that is what the church needs!"
It is good to hear someone with such a strong desire to see God's will
on the earth. The song "Salvation" from the album has been
a great hit both at youth events and in churches around the world, as
Charlie happily explained the song came from the prayers of his local
church. "When I write a worship song it is either coming out of
a personal cry or a corporate church cry. Salvation is a corporate cry
of my local church body. We had been praying as a church for several
years the prayers and scriptures of this song. I felt like God was asking
me to document these prayers in a song that we could reach into through
the years as a prayer"
The good news for
fans of the Passion series is that Charlie plans to continue leading
at the events. "I love the Passion events and heart. Until God
does something different with me I intend to be apart of this journey.
I love the leadership and I love the expectation for God that people
show up with." The Passion events have touched the hearts and lives
of many young people, the best example being the ONEDAY event when 40,000
young people from around the world gathered before God. As a worship
leader at this event Charlie was able to see this first-hand. "It
was an awesome overwhelming experience. I have prayed for years for
God's heart and revival. Inside that day I felt like God was saying
this is a token for your prayers. One Day was an amazing day in God."
He also bears good news with the information that "OneDay 2003
is coming down the pike." You would think that with all of this
success it would be easy to lose sight of your purpose but Hall's feet
remain planted firmly on the ground. "The most encouraging thing
is seeing people experience God and being able to be apart of that connection.
A worship leader is to lift people past the song and the band and his
or herself and connect people to God. When I see them connect not to
me but to God I am blown away at the life they find."
Drawing his musical
influences from a wide range of sources, which helps explain the diversity
of styles in his music. "I listen to all sorts of stuff, I listen
to primarily God focused worship music. But I also love God's expression
through so many artists like Michael Talbot, U2, Shawn mullins, Waterdeep
and right now I am listening to a little Moby."
On the subject of
the future Charlie is relying on God to show him what to do. "I
am actually been asking that of God. God, Where do you want me, what
are you after. I have trouble assuming things sometimes so each year
I stop and let Him know that I will go where He wants me to. Right now
I plan on tracking with Passion/sixsteps and my local church ministry.
My heart is full for about 10 other things but I am asking God to give
me what I need for this season." With a heart dedicated to God
we are sure that whatever route he takes it will be a great success.
